Government & Political Organizations - Conflict Management

The Choice in Politics and Government, our 2-day training program for government/political organizations, introduces participants to the power of Arbinger's approach and its practical application in the political arena. Individuals and teams learn to see their behavior and motivation in ways that lead to concrete and measurable results - in the form of fewer problems, more cooperation, increased productivity and more.

The Choice in Politics and Government

Day 1: Core Training – The Choice

Format: one 8-hour day.

The Choice is how we begin all our work. Participants learn what the box of self-deception is, how we get in it, and how to get out. They discover that self-deception is at the heart of most "people problems" and learn the extent to which we, as people, contribute to the problems we believe are caused by others.

The Choice gives participants the keys to obtaining desired results in areas such as individual growth, relationships, effective leadership, communication, conflict resolution, team-building, alignment, accountability, trust, motivation, cooperation, vision creation and buy-in, decision-making, and creating responsive policy and legislation.

The Choice covers:

Way of Being: The Source of Influence

  • Our influence does not come from what we do, as most people think. It comes from something deeper, which Arbinger calls "Way of Being".
  • There are two basic Ways of Being: The Responsive Way and The Resistant Way.

The Choice That Determines Way Of Being

  • How individuals move from one Way of Being to the other.
  • Predictable consequences of each way.

When The Resistant Way Becomes Characteristic

  • How the Resistant Way becomes habitual - and the inevitable negative consequences.
  • How to recognize our own Resistant Ways.

The Effect Of The Resistant Way On Others

  • A person who is being Resistant invites resistance in others. This spreads resistance throughout the organization, undercutting the effectiveness of each individual and the achievement of political objectives.
  • We can become unwittingly devoted to self-protection and justification rather than achieving results.

Becoming Responsive: Getting Out Of The Box

  • The practical way to get out of the box of self-deception and stay out.

Day 2: The Choice in Political Leadership - Achieving Out of the Box Political Leadership

Format: an 8-hour day.

The Choice in Political Leadership applies Arbinger's work to both the project of politics and the challenge of governance. It helps participants discover the boxes they carry, and how these boxes affect their work with political allies, political opponents and constituents.

Participants also learn:

  • How to break free from these boxes.
  • How to pursue political objectives in responsive ways, increasing the likelihood of success.
  • How to overcome conflicts that hinder efforts with political allies and opponents.

The Choice in Political Leadership covers:

Box Warning Signs

  • The Box carries characteristic signs -- when identified, they can alert us that we might be in the box.
  • Participants explore these signs in depth to gain greater self-understanding.

Political Traps and Incentives Toward the Box

  • The political process and arena has certain built-in "traps" - features of the political landscape that invite people toward the box. Participants learn about these traps and how to avoid them.

Political Boxes, and How to Escape them

  • Justification boxes come in four main categories, each with their own devastating impact.
  • Participants discover which boxes they are most likely to carry. They discover how these boxes have made them less productive and successful than they could have been. They also learn how to escape the destructive influence of these boxes.

Out-of-the-Box Political Leadership

  • Participants learn a structure of leadership and problem-solving - the Arbinger Leadership Pyramid™ - that will guide all of their strategic decisions, while keeping them out of the box.

Working Across the Aisle and Resolving Political Conflicts

  • Participants learn a model for resolving conflicts
  • Participants then apply that model to resolve an issue that is currently holding them back.
